  Plaza Mayor Christmas Market (Mercado de Navidad de la Plaza Mayor)

  Madrid's classic Christmas market, with more than a century of tradition: fixed stalls with nativity figures, ornaments, joke items for the Inocentes and wigs. Sunday to Thursday 10:00-21:00, Friday, Saturday and eves until 22:00.

  • Metro Sol or Ópera, 5 minutes on foot.
  • Don't come by car: the centre has restricted access (Madrid Central) and the car parks fill up.

  Worth knowing

  • On December weekends and the Constitution Day long weekend it is packed: go on a working day before 13:00.
  • Open 10:00 to 21:00 (Friday, Saturday and eves until 22:00).

  More than 150 craftspeople from all over Spain on the Recoletos boulevard: jewelry, ceramics, toys, hats, bookbinding, leather and textiles.

  People like the festive atmosphere, the location and the food: many return every year for a cheese and cured-meat stall and for the mulled wine. The criticism centres on the ice rink: long queues, delayed sessions, unfriendly staff and a high price for half-hour sessions; with small children there was a lack of help with skating.

  A good afternoon plan with friends or a partner. If you go for the rink, buy a session online and go on a weekday.

  Many like it because the stalls differ from the typical decoration ones and the atmosphere is family-friendly. The big complaint in 2025: the skating rink is synthetic (plastic) and barely glides, and several consider it a rip-off; there is also a lack of places to sit and savoury food.

  A good shopping stroll in the centre. Don't pay for the rink expecting real ice.

  Very well set up, clean and decorated; the marquee with heaters is welcome in December. It is more of a food market for adults than for children, and almost everyone agrees that prices are high (a meat and chips sandwich came to around €17) and the queues to order are long.

  A plan for eating and drinking with friends: expensive, but pretty and under cover.
