Every market is confirmed on the organizer's page or in local press. We list the Christkindlmarkets and the big seasonal markets in each metro, not every church bazaar or one-day craft fair. Where the 2026 dates are out we show them; otherwise last season's — most markets repeat on the same weeks.

185 markets with free entry

Free to walk in; some charge for timed weekend tickets or for the ice rink — the city page says which. The rest of the 308 charge admission or ask for a ticket on peak days.

What locals say before you go

Read from the city subreddits (Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Denver, 2017–2025) and paraphrased — the complaints repeat every December, and so do the fixes.

  • The flagship market is the most crowded place in the city on a weekend. Chicago's downtown Christkindlmarket was voted the most overcrowded holiday market in the country in 2024, and in 2025 the city imposed capacity limits. Locals who still go do it on a weekday at lunch or right at opening; on Saturday evening it is «elbow to elbow» with lines you can't see the end of.
  • The second market in town is the better evening. The same locals point to the suburban or neighborhood editions (Wrigleyville or Aurora instead of Daley Plaza, Columbus Circle instead of Bryant Park on a Saturday): same mugs, same bratwurst, room to walk. Every city page lists them.
  • Expect timed tickets and fences. After 2025 the big markets fence the plaza and count people in; weekend entry may need a free timed ticket. Book it the week before, not at the gate.
  • The mug is the souvenir. The keepsake Glühwein mug — boot-shaped in a good year — is what people queue for; it sells out on the first weekends. Deposit mugs are returned for cash at the drinks hut.
  • Don't trust last year's map. New York's Bryant Park and Herald Square markets both had fires in December 2024 and were rebuilt; layouts and vendors move. Check the organizer's page in the week you go.
  • Accessibility is poor at the busy ones: little seating, narrow fenced lanes, no quiet hour. If that matters, pick a weekday morning or a smaller market.

Where the Christmas market comes from

Markets that sold food and gifts in the weeks before Christmas go back to the late Middle Ages in German-speaking towns — Dresden's Striezelmarkt is recorded in 1434, Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt is world-famous. German immigrants and, much later, city planners brought the idea to America; Chicago's Christkindlmarket, first held in 1996, made it mainstream, and now almost every big city has one.

What to eat, drink and buy

Glühwein — hot mulled wine — in a mug you can keep or return for a deposit; hot cider and cocoa for kids. Bratwurst in a roll, potato pancakes with applesauce, roasted almonds, raclette, pretzels, Lebkuchen gingerbread and Stollen. To take home: glass ornaments, nutcrackers and smokers, cuckoo clocks, wooden toys, candles and knitwear.

Tips for a good visit

Go on a weekday afternoon or right at opening — Friday and Saturday evenings are the busiest. Bring a card, but some huts are cash-only. Check whether weekend entry is ticketed, and look up the market's parking or transit advice; downtown markets are almost always easier by train.

Questions

When do Christmas markets open in the US?
In 2026 most open around Thanksgiving (November 26) — the week before or the Friday after — and run until December 23 or 24; a few, like Bryant Park's Winter Village, stay open into January. Announced openings: Boston's Snowport on November 6; Chicago's Christkindlmarket, Denver's Christkindlmarket and Boston's SoWa on November 20; Bryant Park's Holiday Shops on October 28 (checked October 6, 2026). Many smaller markets are weekends only; each listing below shows its 2026 dates or, if not announced, last season's.
Are Christmas markets free?
Most are free to walk in. A few charge admission or ask for timed tickets at busy times — each listing below says which.
What is a Christkindlmarket?
The German name for a Christmas market — literally the Christ Child's market. It means wooden huts, glühwein in a souvenir mug, bratwurst, gingerbread and handmade ornaments, as in Nuremberg or Munich.
What should I buy at a Christmas market?
Glass ornaments, nutcrackers, cuckoo clocks, wooden toys, candles and smokers from the Ore Mountains, Lebkuchen and Stollen — and the market's own mug, which is a keepsake of the year.

How we check

Every market was confirmed on the organizer's page or in local press by the MerryHoHo editors in October 2026; each card names its source and the season its dates belong to, and the visitor notes paraphrase recent reviews. Nothing here is sponsored and no link pays us. If a date, price or address has changed, write to admin@merryhoho.com and we fix the card.
