Snowmen are older than you think
The oldest known picture of a snowman is a small drawing in the margin of a Book of Hours from 1380, now in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague. In 1494 the ruler of Florence, Piero de' Medici, had the young Michelangelo build a snow statue in his courtyard.
Because a snowman is about winter rather than Christmas, these pages suit classes that celebrate different holidays — and they stay useful in January and February.
How to color something white
- Don't color the snowman white — leave the paper and shade only the edges with light blue or lavender. It looks round and cold.
- Make everything around him bright: a red scarf, an orange carrot nose, a dark hat. The white comes forward by contrast.
- On the village page, color the sky dark blue and the windows yellow — instant evening light.
Printing
Every page is sized for US Letter (8.5 × 11 in). In the print dialog choose 100 % or “Fit to page”; on A4 paper “Fit” keeps the whole drawing.
Crayons and colored pencils: ordinary 20–24 lb copy paper is fine. Markers and watercolor bleed through thin paper — use 65 lb cardstock.
Add your child's name before printing and it appears over the picture, so a stack of pages from a party or a class sorts itself.
Ideas
- Glue cotton wool or torn white paper on the easy snowman — a sticky, happy toddler craft.
- After a real snow day, kids color the snowman they built and add his name.
