A big reindeer face for toddlers, a young reindeer with a shiny red nose, Santa's sleigh team — and a realistic reindeer under the northern lights for grown-ups.

Page by page: what is on it and who it suits

Rudolph and the other eight

Santa's reindeer first got names in «A Visit from St. Nicholas», printed in the Troy Sentinel on 23 December 1823 — Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid and, in the original spelling, Dunder and Blixem, later Donder and Blitzen.

Rudolph came much later: Robert L. May wrote him in 1939 as a giveaway booklet for the Montgomery Ward stores in Chicago, and 2.4 million copies went out that first year. Gene Autry's recording of the song reached number one in Christmas week 1949.

A fact kids like: reindeer are the only deer where females can have antlers too — so a reindeer with antlers can just as well be a girl.

Coloring tips

  • Warm browns for the fur, a lighter cream on the chest and muzzle, darker brown for the antlers.
  • On the forest page, color the northern lights in soft green and violet bands and leave white gaps between them.
  • For the mandala reindeer, pick a cold palette (blues, silver gray) or a warm one (reds, golds) — mixing both on one page gets busy.

Printing

Every page is sized for US Letter (8.5 × 11 in). In the print dialog choose 100 % or “Fit to page”; on A4 paper “Fit” keeps the whole drawing.

Crayons and colored pencils: ordinary 20–24 lb copy paper is fine. Markers and watercolor bleed through thin paper — use 65 lb cardstock.

Add your child's name before printing and it appears over the picture, so a stack of pages from a party or a class sorts itself.

Ideas

  • Color the reindeer face, cut it out and glue it on a paper bag — a reindeer puppet in ten minutes.
  • Name your reindeer: write one of the nine names from the poem and the song under each reindeer on the team page.
  • Hang the finished flying reindeer in the window facing the way you think Santa will come.

Questions

Is there a Rudolph coloring page?
There is a red-nosed reindeer page: a young reindeer with a shiny nose and a bow, drawn as a reindeer of our own rather than the character from the song and TV special. For toddlers there is also a big reindeer face with a round nose to color red.
What are the names of Santa's reindeer?
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder and Blitzen (Dunder and Blixem in the 1823 poem), plus Rudolph, added in 1939.
Do you have a detailed reindeer page for adults?
Two: a realistic reindeer in a snowy forest under the northern lights, and a reindeer head filled with mandala patterns.
Do female reindeer have antlers?
They can: reindeer are the only deer in which females may grow antlers, though how many do varies between populations.
