Page by page: what is on it and who it suits

Where gingerbread houses come from

Decorated gingerbread houses appeared in Germany in the early 1800s, in a country whose gingerbread bakers — in Nuremberg especially — had been famous for centuries. They are often linked to the witch's house in the Brothers Grimm's Hansel and Gretel, though food historians argue about which came first.

Coloring the house first is a good plan before building a real one: kids choose which candies go where, and the page becomes the decorating plan.

Looking for a gingerbread man coloring page?

We don't have a single plain gingerbread man outline yet. The baking page has a tray of gingerbread men to color, and the cookie friends page shows three gingerbread kids in hats and sweaters — the toddler-friendly option is the star cookie.

Coloring tips

  • Light brown for the gingerbread, a darker brown along one side of each wall — the house stands out from the page.
  • Leave icing lines white; color the candies in bright, saturated colors next to them.
  • For the village, color the snow last: keep it white and shade under the roofs with pale blue.

Printing

Every page is sized for US Letter (8.5 × 11 in). In the print dialog choose 100 % or “Fit to page”; on A4 paper “Fit” keeps the whole drawing.

Crayons and colored pencils: ordinary 20–24 lb copy paper is fine. Markers and watercolor bleed through thin paper — use 65 lb cardstock.

Add your child's name before printing and it appears over the picture, so a stack of pages from a party or a class sorts itself.

Ideas

  • Before building a real gingerbread house, let kids color the page as the decorating plan — which candy goes on the roof, which on the path.
  • Cut out the cookie friends and tape them to the window in a row, like a garland.
  • Print the baking page for the day you bake: kids color the cookie shapes they cut out.
