Page by page: what is on it and who it suits

How the first Christmas trees were decorated

The decorated Christmas tree comes from the Upper Rhine. Records from Strasbourg show the city buying fir trees for its parishes in 1492, and a 1521 forestry account in Sélestat pays for guarding trees from 21 December. In 1605 a Strasbourg writer described the custom as widespread and listed the decorations: roses cut from colored paper, apples, wafers and sugar.

That makes a nice challenge for older kids: color one tree the 1605 way — red apples, paper roses in many colors, pale wafers — and one the way your family decorates it today.

Coloring tips for a tree

  • Use two or three greens: dark at the bottom of each branch layer, lighter at the tips. It gives the tree depth even with crayons.
  • Color baubles last, with bright colors and a small white spot left as a shine.
  • Gold is hard with crayons — yellow with a touch of orange along one edge reads as gold from across the room.

Printing

Every page is sized for US Letter (8.5 × 11 in). In the print dialog choose 100 % or “Fit to page”; on A4 paper “Fit” keeps the whole drawing.

Crayons and colored pencils: ordinary 20–24 lb copy paper is fine. Markers and watercolor bleed through thin paper — use 65 lb cardstock.

Add your child's name before printing and it appears over the picture, so a stack of pages from a party or a class sorts itself.

Ideas

  • Cut out the finished tree and tape it to a window — the light shines through thin copy paper.
  • Print the simple tree twice: one to color, one to decorate with stickers or glued paper circles.
  • Classroom: everyone colors a tree, and the trees together make a paper forest on the wall.

Questions

Which Christmas tree page is easiest?
The simple tree: one shape, six baubles, a star and a pot with extra-thick lines, made for ages 2–4. The kawaii tree is also easy, with big round outlines.
Is there a Christmas tree coloring page for adults?
Yes, the patterned tree: it is filled with swirls, paisleys and tiny baubles. Use fine-tip markers or sharp colored pencils.
How do I color a Christmas tree so it doesn't look flat?
Use two or three greens — darker under each branch layer, lighter at the tips — and leave a small white spot on each bauble as a shine.
Where did the Christmas tree come from?
From the Upper Rhine: Strasbourg bought fir trees for its parishes in 1492, and a 1605 description from Strasbourg lists paper roses, apples, wafers and sugar as decorations.
Are the tree coloring pages free to print?
Yes, free to print, download and color online, without sign-up or watermark.
