Where to go: with kids, on a date, with friends

With kids

Short walks, Santa, rides and something to do besides looking.

For a date

Somewhere to walk slowly, a drink in hand, and look good in the photos.

With friends

Cheap by the carload, or a long evening with food and music.

Free neighborhoods

No ticket, but the best-known ones get very crowded. Go on a weeknight if you can, and read the card for how to get in.

Neighborhood·Rancho PeñasquitosFree

Christmas Card Lane

About 200 families in Rancho Peñasquitos turn their front yards into giant hand-painted Christmas cards — cartoon characters, nativity scenes, snowmen — set against walls of lights. Neighbours sell hot chocolate, lattes, popcorn and home baking along the way. Park at the school and walk it.

Visitors call it unique, vibrant and more elaborate every year, with a proper Christmas mood. They especially enjoy the street snacks — cocoa, lattes, cakes, even baklava. Parking at the school across the road is easy; driving through the lanes is harder.

San Diego's best free Christmas evening. Park at the school, walk, and bring cash for cocoa.

Reviewers compare it to the Griswolds' house — street after street of color and blow-ups, and a real community effort. The streets are steep, so it's a workout on foot and hard on a car's transmission.

Worth it with kids — pick a weeknight, and bring comfortable shoes if you walk.

Why some dates say 2025

Most displays announce the season in October or November. Until they do, we show last year's dates and say so, rather than guess this year's. Every card shows the day we last checked it and where the facts came from.
