Christmas lights in San Antonio

San Antonio's lights are better organised than most cities': the big drive-thrus and the botanical garden had already published their 2026 dates by September. The River Walk is free and right downtown, so the real question there is parking, not tickets. Windcrest, a small city inside San Antonio, turns whole streets into a contest every December.

Where to go: with kids, on a date, with friends

With kids

Short walks, Santa, rides and something to do besides looking.

For a date

Somewhere to walk slowly, a drink in hand, and look good in the photos.

With friends

Cheap by the carload, or a long evening with food and music.

Free neighborhoods

No ticket, but the best-known ones get very crowded. Go on a weeknight if you can, and read the card for how to get in.

Windcrest Light-Up

A small city inside San Antonio where residents compete over their Christmas lights, street after street, and pick a theme each year — red, white and blue for 2026. Drive it, or park outside and walk or bike; on Bike Night part of it closes to cars.

🧒 With kids🎉 With friends

What's there

  • Houses competing street by street
  • Free
  • Bike Night with car-free streets
  • Map of winners for a small donation

What visitors sayGoogle 4.4 ★ · 241 reviews

Opinions split. Families who come every year love driving the lanes and seeing each house's theme. Others found heavy traffic and far fewer decorated homes than in past years, with the best houses spread thinly across a big neighborhood — some parked outside and walked faster than the cars.

Worth it if you pick up the map and head straight for the winners — or come on Bike Night. Don't expect every house to join in.

  • On Bike Night (Dec 17, 2026) part of the route is set aside for bicycles only.

Worth knowing

  • The season opens with the tree lighting at Jim Seal and Crestway, then Candy Cane Lane at Windway & Patriot Island; check the city's calendar for the 2026 dates.

Drive-thru shows

Paid per car, not per person, so a full car is the cheap way to do it. Weekends are the busy nights.

Lights Alive!

A one-mile drive through light scenes synced to music on your car radio, then a whole winter wonderland to walk around afterwards: Santa, crafts in Santa's workshop, escape rooms, inflatables, a holiday market and a 50-foot tree you can program from your phone. Two sites, one ticket per car.

Families rave about it — kids from toddlers to teens enjoy the drive, and grandparents like the village afterwards. Regulars say new displays appear every year and the per-car price is fair next to other shows. The one practical note: the Roft Road site is reached by a long dirt road, and weekend lines need snacks for the kids.

The best family light show in San Antonio. Go on a weeknight, buy online, and plan to stay for the wonderland.

Reviewers love the tunnels and themed areas and say the traffic moves at just the right speed to take it in. Staff get a lot of praise. People who arrived just before the gate opened got through almost at once; a few found the story told by the displays hard to follow.

Worth the drive from San Antonio — especially early in the evening, when you'll be through the gate in minutes.

Families and couples like the friendly staff at the gate, the lights blinking in time with the radio music, and a weekday visit with no line at all — several called it a perfect date night. The one complaint: at $50–60 a car at peak, the drive takes only 10–15 minutes even going slowly.

A solid option if you live on the west side; otherwise Lights Alive gives you more for the same money.

River Walk Holiday Lights

The most romantic Christmas walk in Texas: the downtown river loop with about 200,000 lights strung through the bald cypress trees, doubled in the water below. You stroll past restaurants and bars at water level, or take a river barge through the lit trees. The season opens with the Ford Holiday River Parade on Friday, November 27, 2026 — the parade is ticketed, the lights are free every night.

✨ Date night🧒 With kids🎉 With friends

What's there

  • Free to walk, every night of the season
  • River barge rides through the lights
  • Restaurants and bars along the water
  • Holiday River Parade on opening night

What visitors sayGoogle 4.7 ★ · 47,411 reviews

It's one of the best-loved places in Texas, and visitors say it's at its best after dark, when the lights come on and a boat ride feels a little like Venice. The complaints are practical: restaurant prices on the water are high, and it gets crowded on weekends in December.

Worth it for anyone — free, walkable and genuinely beautiful. For a date, book a barge ride and eat a block away from the river to save money.

  • The River Walk is a public park, open 24 hours — the lights are free.

Visitors call the transformed garden beautiful and the sculptures stunning. One reviewer noted it's themed on nature rather than Christmas — flowers, animals and insects rather than Santa and snowmen — which is worth knowing if you're after tinsel.

A lovely, calm evening for a date or with small children. Not the place for classic Christmas kitsch.

Why some dates say 2025

Most displays announce the season in October or November. Until they do, we show last year's dates and say so, rather than guess this year's. Every card shows the day we last checked it and where the facts came from.
