Christmas lights in Houston

Houston spreads its lights over an hour's drive in every direction: the botanic garden and the zoo in town, the drive-thrus out in Katy and Spring, the biggest walk-through festival at the Fort Bend fairgrounds, and Moody Gardens down in Galveston. The free option is River Oaks, where the grandest houses in the city light up for December.

Where to go: with kids, on a date, with friends

With kids

Short walks, Santa, rides and something to do besides looking.

For a date

Somewhere to walk slowly, a drink in hand, and look good in the photos.

With friends

Cheap by the carload, or a long evening with food and music.

Free neighborhoods

No ticket, but the best-known ones get very crowded. Go on a weeknight if you can, and read the card for how to get in.

River Oaks

Houston's grandest neighborhood in its Christmas best: huge mansions, manicured lawns and old oaks wrapped in lights, street after street, each one decorated a little differently. You can drive it slowly, walk the sidewalks, or pay for a horse-drawn carriage.

What's there

  • Mansions and giant oaks in lights
  • Free
  • Horse-drawn carriage rides
  • Good for photos and video

What visitors sayGoogle 4.6 ★ · 997 reviews

Many call it the best lights in Houston, and even visitors who aren't wowed by every display say the houses alone are worth seeing. The downside is traffic: people report 40–50 minute waits in the area on busy nights, and a few regulars feel fewer streets go all out than in past years. Walking parts of it is the relaxed way.

Worth it — free and genuinely grand. Go on a weeknight, park a few blocks out and walk the best streets.

The Light Park

A drive-thru light show synced to music on your car radio, at two sites on either side of the city — Katy and Spring — each with its own displays. You drive past the snack stand first; the electric lemonade and popcorn have fans.

  • Katy and Spring each different
  • Popcorn and light-up lemonade
  • Fast pass to skip the wait

Reviews of the Katy site: families enjoy the choreography and the snacks, and some do both sites because the shows differ. The criticism is length and price — the drive itself can be under ten minutes, which some felt was short for around $50 a car, and one reviewer's fast pass didn't seem to speed things up.

Good for a quick festive outing with kids; buy online and go on a weekday.

What's there

  • Synchronized light displays
  • Animated scenes
  • Easy marked path
  • METRORail stop nearby

What visitors sayGoogle 4.6 ★ · 44,184 reviews

The zoo is one of the best-rated places in Houston, and a visitor who came for the holiday light show called it spectacular — synchronized and animated displays, more colors than they could describe, and a well-marked path. The usual complaint is getting there through the traffic and finding parking.

The easy pick with small kids. Take the METRORail rather than fighting for parking.

Where
Houston Zoo, Hermann Park

Getting in and parking

  • The zoo has no parking lot of its own. There is free parking in Hermann Park, but it fills up.
  • The zoo's own advice: park at the 6400 Fannin garage and take the METRORail Red Line to Memorial Hermann Hospital/Houston Zoo, then walk about ten minutes through Hermann Park.

Worth knowing

  • Strollers, wagons and wheelchairs can be rented at the zoo.
  • Pets aren't allowed, except service animals.

Magical Winter Lights

A huge walk-through lantern festival on the Fort Bend fairgrounds: you enter through a giant glowing castle, then wander themed light zones with carnival food and Chinese acrobatics shows.

The castle at the entrance draws gasps, kids don't want to leave, and the acrobats are a highlight. A few found the lanterns underwhelming for the size of the site, and one complaint about dirty portable toilets was hard to miss.

A fun family night out if you like lantern festivals; go on a weekday for cheaper tickets.

Families come back every Christmas and say there's always something new. The ice-sculpture exhibit and skating get special mentions, and some make a tradition of the holiday buffet.

Why some dates say 2025

Most displays announce the season in October or November. Until they do, we show last year's dates and say so, rather than guess this year's. Every card shows the day we last checked it and where the facts came from.
