In person

Someone actually
knocks on the door.

Across much of Europe the gift-bringer does not send a video — he arrives, in costume, with a companion or two, and reads out what the children have been up to. It is the oldest version of this and the hardest to find from outside the country.

Why this is hard to find

A performer who visits houses works a radius of perhaps forty kilometres. The market is thousands of one- and two-person operations plus a few regional agencies, listed in the local language on local classifieds, and none of them has any reason to be findable from another country.

So a parent who has moved abroad, or who married into a tradition, has no way in. They do not know the search term, the date, the going rate, or that the good slots were taken in October. That is the gap this page exists to close.

Every price below traces to the sources under it. Where a market publishes no prices at all — Spain, Croatia, Chile and several others quote only on request — the row says so instead of carrying a number nobody quoted.

  • Belgium

Saint Nicolas · Père Fouettard · Sinterklaas · Piet

    €160 – €595

In Wallonia and Brussels, Saint Nicolas arrives with Père Fouettard and works a group of up to ten to twenty-five children for as much as an hour. In Flanders, Sinterklaas comes with one or two Pieten, brings strooigoed, sings, and writes a personal line for each child in het Grote Boek — usually ten to twenty minutes.

The country splits in two. Wallonia and Brussels price by the hour — from €160 for Saint Nicolas alone, €100 more for Père Fouettard, €80 for a further performer, plus travel outside Brussels. Flanders sells packages: roughly €495–595 including VAT for Sinterklaas with two Pieten, though parish-style operators take a voluntary donation instead of a fee.

No fixed lead time is published. One operator replies within 72 hours and notes bookings come earlier each year.

  • Czechia

    Mikuláš · čert · anděl

    100–800 Kč

Three characters arrive together: Mikuláš, an angel and a devil. The angel vouches for the child, the devil does not, and the child usually recites a poem or sings before receiving sweets. It happens on the evening of 5 December, not at Christmas.

Books out weeks ahead — Czech press reporting on the 2025 season found most groups already had full diaries. A Prague agency asks for thirty days' notice.

  • Netherlands

    Sinterklaas · Pieten

    €38.5 – €495

    about 20 min

Sinterklaas arrives at the door, usually with two or more Pieten, reads from the book about each child by name, hands out presents and pepernoten, and leaves. Twenty minutes is the standard unit; the expensive tier is longer and involves more of a performance.

Bookable through both individual performers and regional agencies. The cheaper end sells out first, and the good slots on the evening of 5 December go earliest.

  • Austria

    Nikolaus · Krampus

    €65 – €80

Nikolaus arrives in bishop's vestments with the golden book, reads out what has been written about each child, and hands over a small bundle. Where a Krampus comes too, he arrives first and loudly — the fright is the structure, and Nikolaus is the relief.

About €65 for Nikolaus alone and around €80 with a Krampus. Several Austrian operators also sell the online versions outright — roughly €55 for a live video call and €40 for a recorded message.

Tied to a single evening and to Krampus groups that are booked for public runs the same night, so the private slots are limited by how many performers are not already on a street somewhere.

  • Switzerland

    Samichlaus · Schmutzli

    150–170 CHF

Samichlaus comes in the evenings before 6 December with Schmutzli, whose face is blackened with soot. He opens a book that records how the year went, the children recite a poem or sing, and Schmutzli hands out nuts, mandarins and small gifts from his sack.

About CHF 150 for forty-five minutes plus a minimum of CHF 10 per child, so two children come to CHF 170; a filled sack is about CHF 15 more. Village St Nikolaus societies take a voluntary donation rather than a fee, and corporate visits run around CHF 400 an hour.

Village societies run fixed sign-up deadlines rather than rolling bookings — Schmerikon closed its list on 27 October for a visiting window of 2 to 6 December.

  • Germany

    Nikolaus · Knecht Ruprecht

    €25 – €80

Nikolaus comes with the golden book and, in many regions, with Knecht Ruprecht carrying the rod. In some German communities it is run entirely by volunteers with no fixed price at all — a donation of around €10 per child is what is expected rather than charged.

The cheapest end of any market researched here, because much of it is not a business. A parish service in Bayreuth charges about €25 per visit plus €5 per child inside the town; commercial agencies add travel outside Munich, Stuttgart, Cologne, Frankfurt and Berlin.

Parish and volunteer schemes open their lists in November and fill quickly, because they are cheaper than the agencies and there are only so many evenings.

    Sveti Nikola

    Not published

The core custom is not a visit at all: gifts — sweets, fruit, a small toy — are left overnight in cleaned boots for the morning of 6 December. A paid costumed visit exists alongside it, but it is the smaller half of the tradition.

  • Hungary

    Mikulás · Krampusz

    25,500–53,500 Ft

Mikulás comes alone or with a Krampusz. He asks whether the child behaved, hears a poem, and hands over a sack of sweets; longer bookings add songs, games and photographs.

Moves with the size of the group — five children is the standard cap — and with length, from a five-minute handover to a full hour. Fuel is about 140 forint a kilometre outside the base zone, and a Krampusz adds roughly 9,500.

The season runs 1 to 23 December. Families confirm two to three weeks ahead, and the arrival time is narrowed to a twenty-minute window as the date approaches.

  • Poland

    Święty Mikołaj · Śnieżynka

    150–1,200 zł

    about 20 min

Święty Mikołaj arrives with a sack and often a Śnieżynka. He asks each child whether they have been good, hears a poem or a song, and hands over presents the parents have passed to him beforehand. Polish households run him on 6 December, on Christmas Eve, or both.

Sold by the ten minutes: around 215 zł for ten, 295 zł for twenty, 359 zł for half an hour and about 725 zł for a full one. The two dates everyone wants — 6 and 24 December — carry a premium, and travel outside the city is charged at roughly 1 zł per kilometre each way. A Śnieżynka or an elf alongside him adds 100–150 zł.

Agencies advise booking several weeks ahead, and the Christmas Eve slots go first. Polish press covering the trade has reported rates reaching 1000 zł an hour at the top of the market.

A performer arrives with one or two helpers, plays and sings, then formally hands over gifts the parents supplied.

    Mikuláš · anjel · čert

    €45 – €50

    about 20 min

Mikuláš comes with an angel and a devil. The devil threatens to take the badly behaved child away and the angel talks him out of it; the child recites a poem or sings, is asked how the year went, and gets the balíček the parents ordered in advance.

The base covers up to five children for ten to thirty minutes, with €5–7 per extra child. A pre-ordered sweet package is about €6.90 a child, and there is a surcharge outside the base zone.

  • Ukraine

    Святий Миколай · Ангел

    850–1,700 ₴

Since the 2023 calendar reform the visit runs on 6 December rather than the old 19th, though some parishes still keep the old date through the transition. Mykolai comes, sometimes with an Angel, sets riddles and games, and hands over the sack. The Soviet-era Дід Мороз New Year trade still exists commercially but is fading as customs are deliberately unpicked from Russian ones.

About 850–1,100 hryvnia for a household visit, 1,500 for up to ten children and 1,700 for twenty to forty, with roughly 300 more for travel. Bringing the Angel costs more than Mykolai alone.

  • Australia

    Santa Claus

    $393 – $471

A midsummer Christmas, and it shapes the job: performers wear lighter summer suits rather than heavy velour, and sunburn and heat exhaustion are recurring complaints in the trade. Agencies operate nationally and advertise a Working with Children Check.

A Sydney marketplace average of about $431, spanning $393–471 — for Santa bookings generally rather than home visits specifically. The dedicated home-visit operators quote on request and publish nothing.

    Julemanden · Julemor

    300–2,000 kr

Julemanden comes on the evening of the 24th, sometimes with Julemor, for ten to thirty minutes — a short Christmas conversation, the family’s presents handed over, photographs. Which hour of the evening you want is the single biggest thing you are paying for.

The widest spread of any market here, and it is driven almost entirely by the time slot. A daytime ten to fifteen minutes runs 300–500 kr; the same visit costs 1400 kr between one and five o’clock and 1600 kr in the evening; a private Christmas Eve call runs 1800–2000 kr. Julemor adds about 200 kr.

    about 25 min

On jõululaupäev he comes to the house, asks whether the children behaved through the year, usually asks for a poem or a song, and hands one or two gifts per child from his sack. Twenty to thirty minutes.

Seventy-five euros is the season’s opening rate; sought-after performers go past 200. Tallinn and Tartu cost markedly more than Valga or Põlva.

The earliest booking market found anywhere. Enquiries start arriving in July, the active window is late September into October, and many families rebook next year’s slot on the spot. Joulupukki · tonttu

    €40 – €200

He arrives on Christmas Eve, asks the traditional question — onkos täällä kiltisti käyttäytyneitä lapsia — and hands out the presents the family has set aside and labelled for him in advance.

The most developed market of all of these, and the most fragmented. The common range is €40–80, sometimes over €100; one operator charges €70–120 depending on the slot and the municipality, and a named Helsinki performer asks €120 for ten minutes on Christmas Eve. Bringing a tonttu costs more. Visits run fifteen to twenty-five minutes.

It exists to protect the belief for small children, and sits entirely apart from Japan’s dominant Christmas Eve, which is a commercial occasion for couples rather than a family one.

By plan rather than by hour: a nationwide video message is a flat ¥5,000; a home visit ¥10,000–23,000 depending on the number of children and the date; a late-night plan where he comes while the child sleeps starts around ¥30,000; a group performance ¥30,000–50,000 and up. Santa comes to the house, has a conversation with the children, hands out a small wrapped treat and reads a story; the visit lengthens with the size of the group. A DBS check is the trust signal operators advertise, and it is worth asking for.

One regional operator publishes a full ladder: £58 for one child and up to twenty-five minutes, £79 for up to five children and thirty-five minutes, £99 for nine or more and forty-five minutes, plus £10 travel and £3.50 per extra child. The national agencies quote privately and publish nothing, so this is one operator rather than a national rate.

No lead time published. Note that the visiting season runs from mid-November to 23 December — that operator does not work Christmas Eve at all.

    Santa Claus

    €210 – €257

A costumed Santa comes to the house, talks with the children, hands over presents the family supplied, tells a story and poses for photographs. Some operators bring a small grotto setup. There is no fixed ritual here comparable to the Alpine or Nordic versions.

Marketplace averages only — around €210–257 nationally and about €250 in Dublin. No Irish operator publishes its own rate card, so treat these as the going rate rather than a quoted price.

    Şaxta Baba · Qar Qız

    70–400 ₼

    about 60 min

As across the former Soviet Union, this is New Year rather than Christmas. Şaxta Baba and Qar Qız visit homes and children’s events through the whole of December, hearing poems and handing out presents.

Per hour, and booking early is rewarded explicitly: 70 AZN for Şaxta Baba alone if booked before 1 December, 85 after; 95 with Qar Qız if early, 120 after. Baku listings run wider, to 400 AZN for a full visit, and regional trips reach about 1000.

Any date between 1 December and 5 January can be chosen, and booking before 1 December secures the lower rate.

    Sveti Nikola · Djed Mraz

There is no single national trade here, and the split is along community lines: Catholic Croat areas such as Mostar mark Sveti Nikola on 6 December with public appearances and boots left out, while Republika Srpska and secular families in Sarajevo follow the Serbian pattern of Djed Mraz at New Year. A private booking business exists in Banja Luka.

No home-visit price published. The businesses that exist ask for direct contact; the only concrete figures found were tickets to public events, which is a different thing.

    Άγιος Βασίλης

    €60 – €200

Greece runs on a different night from most of Europe. Agios Vasilis comes on the evening of 31 December into the morning of the 1st — his name day, and the night families exchange presents and cut the vasilopita. A hired performer appears, talks with the children and hands over the family’s own gifts.

An Athens operator lists three tiers: about €60 plus VAT for a basic call, €100 for a fuller visit and €200 for the longest. Price scales with length, extra characters and staging such as a throne or a sleigh.

    10,000–50,000 ₸

A New Year visit rather than a Christmas one, and a well-developed one in Almaty specifically, with agencies dedicated to it rather than general party platforms.

A short five-to-seven-minute programme — greeting, poem, presents — starts at 10,000 tenge; the fuller version with the Snow Maiden runs 40,000–50,000. Costume hire alone is 5,000–20,000 a day if you would rather do it yourself.

    650–2,000 lei

    about 20 min

Moldova keeps two rival figures alive at once: the Soviet-derived Moș Gerilă awaited at New Year, and the Western Moș Crăciun on 25 December, which is gaining ground. Many households observe both. The hired version leads dances and contests around the tree before handing out gifts.

Fifteen to thirty minutes, bookable across 1 to 30 December but explicitly not on the 25th or the 31st themselves. Price moves with date, hour and district. The source could not be re-checked live.

    Deda Mraz

    2,000–22,000 дин

    about 40 min

A New Year visit, not a Christmas one — Orthodox Serbs mark Christmas separately as a religious feast without gift-giving. The performer spends twenty minutes to an hour with the family, talks and plays with the children, and then formally presents the gifts the parents supplied.

One of the steepest escalations anywhere. Daytime visits run 2,000–8,000 dinars; after eight in the evening the floor jumps to 7,000 and the ceiling to 15,000; adding an elf, a fairy or a female Deda Mraz takes it to 22,000.

Booked days rather than weeks ahead, with demand packed into the last week of December.

    Noel Baba

    10,000 ₺

Turkey attaches the figure to yılbaşı, New Year’s Eve, not to Christmas — the gift-giving figure was absorbed into the secular New Year during the twentieth century, while Christmas remains a minority observance. Booked through event companies that also handle costume hire and party staffing.

Only a floor is published — the most economical option starts at 10,000 lira, with no ceiling given. It moves with duration, event type and location.

    250,000–1,020,000 so’m

    about 15 min

Uzbekistan does not mark Christmas publicly, so this is purely a Soviet-legacy New Year custom — and the pricing shows how concentrated the demand is, with the last hours of 31 December costing three times the rest of the month.

The most finely tiered pricing of any market researched. Fifteen minutes runs 250,000 sum on 19–21 December and 300,000 from the 22nd to the 30th; on New Year’s Eve itself it climbs from 300,000 to 1,020,000 depending on the exact hour. An hour-long show is 500,000–650,000.

Corporate bookings open in November; household visits are arranged through December, closer to the date.

The Kings arrive on the evening of 5 January, after the Cabalgata has gone through the town. Pages can come instead of or alongside them: in many families the page is the one who collects the letter earlier in the season, and the Kings themselves appear only on the night.

No Spanish operator found publishes a price. Every one of them asks you to make contact for a quote, which is itself the useful finding: budget for a conversation rather than a checkout, and get the figure in writing before the 5th.

Sold as packages rather than by time — one King with a page, all three Kings with a page, or a page on his own. Coverage clusters around Madrid and Barcelona and their surrounding provinces.

Researched, and no trade found

A researched absence is a finding. These were searched in the local language and the business does not appear to exist — which is worth knowing before spending an evening looking for it.

  • Armenia

The custom plainly exists — Ձմեռ պապ and his companion appear at homes and children’s events at New Year, as across the region. But unlike Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, Armenian searches return folklore and reference material rather than agencies: this looks like a real tradition arranged informally, through schools, kindergartens and word of mouth, rather than a visible trade.

  • Thailand

The one country researched where the business appears not to exist at all. Thai searches for hiring a performer return costume rentals, a property company that happens to share the name, and tourism copy about Lapland. Christmas in Thailand is a commercial decorating season in malls and hotels rather than something that happens in a house, and no dispatch-to-the-home service was found behind it.

Before you book anyone

A home visit means a stranger in costume inside your house, with your children. Most of this trade is entirely ordinary — the same people do children’s parties all year — but the sensible checks are the same ones you would make for any of it.

  • Book somewhere with a business identity you can verify — a company name, an invoice, a phone number that answers in March.
  • Agree the price, the length and the arrival window in writing. Rates in this trade are quoted per family and rise per additional child.
  • Ask what the performer needs from you in advance. A list of the children's names and one thing each has done is normal; a home address is obviously needed; anything beyond that is not.
  • An adult stays in the room. That is not a comment on the performer.
  • Book early. In Czechia the 2025 reporting found most groups already full, and 5 December is a single evening that everyone wants.
