How to write a Christmas wish that doesn't read like a forward

Sir/Ma'am or first name?

Write the way you speak at work. If your office says "Sir" and "Ma'am", keep it on the card too; startups and MNCs that use first names can stay casual. In the boss, colleague and client wishes above, every text switches between Casual and Formal with one tap.

One personal line

A name instead of "Dear all", one real detail ("thank you for covering my leave in March") and a wish that fits the person. Sending thirty wishes? Keep the same base text and change only that one line – people notice.

When you don't know their faith

Christmas is a gazetted holiday and many Indians of every faith enjoy the cake, the lights and the day off. If you're not sure how someone celebrates, "Season's Greetings" or "Happy holidays" is warm and safe – for clients, bosses and the office group alike. If someone replies with a different greeting, a simple "Thank you, and the same to you" is enough.

When to send

Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, so most offices have a long weekend from 25 to 27 December. Send work and client wishes on your last working day before it (Thursday, 24 December, or earlier if your office closes); family and friends on the 24th night or the morning of the 25th. Printed cards by post: send by mid-December.

Christmas wishes on WhatsApp without the forward feeling

India forwards more than anyone – which is why a forward is easy to spot. Three steps keep it quick and still personal:

  1. Name first – "Dear Anita," or "Hi Rohan," instead of nothing.
  2. One line only for them: something from this year or a plan for the next.
  3. Then the common wish. For groups (family, office, society) post once in the group instead of sending everyone the same forward.
  • Dear Anita, [one line just for you, e.g. "thank you for the lift every morning when my scooter broke down!"] Wishing you and your family a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Enjoy the long weekend!

    WhatsApp

Glittery "good morning"-style images with someone else's watermark get skipped. A card from this page with the person's name on it takes ten seconds and looks like you made it – because you did.

Questions about Christmas wishes

What is the best wish for Christmas?

One that fits the person: a real detail and a short wish. For example: "Merry Christmas! Thank you for being there this year when it mattered." Pick the person and tone above and you get three ready wishes. Wishes for family and friends

How do I wish Merry Christmas?

Start with their name, add one line about them and end with the wish – "Dear Sunita, thank you for the Diwali sweets! Merry Christmas to you and the family." For groups, one message in the group is better than many forwards. WhatsApp template

How do I write best wishes for Christmas?

Three parts: name, something specific (help, a memory, a plan) and a wish for the new year. For work, keep it formal and add "Sir" or "Ma'am" if that's how your office speaks.

How can I wish Merry Christmas in a unique way?

Use something only you two share: the cake you always fight over, the carol night in your building, the Park Street crowd. Or send it in their language – Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali or Marathi. Wishes in Indian languages

Can I wish Merry Christmas if I'm not Christian?

Yes. Christmas is a public holiday in India and people of every faith wish each other, share cake and visit the lights. If you prefer, "Season's Greetings" or "Happy holidays" is just as warm. Wishes for every faith

How do I wish my boss Merry Christmas?

Short and respectful: "Merry Christmas, Sir/Ma'am. Thank you for your guidance this year. Wishing you and your family a restful long weekend." Thank them for something specific, avoid flattery, and send it before the holiday. Wishes for your boss

Merry Christmas in Hindi – how do you say it?

"मेरी क्रिसमस" (Merry Christmas) or "क्रिसमस की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ" (heartfelt Christmas wishes). In the north Christmas is also called "बड़ा दिन" (Bada Din, the big day). Hindi wishes

What should I write in the office WhatsApp group?

One message to everyone: "Season's Greetings, everyone! Thank you for a great year – see you in January." Don't send the same forward to each person, and don't expect replies during the holiday.
