For each town we list the Christmas markets announced by the council, the venue or the organisers — not one-day school fetes. House light displays are in our Christmas lights guide, and winter “Christmas in July” festivals aren't listed here. 2026 dates appear as soon as they're official.

Christmas markets, Australian style

Australian Christmas markets are mostly twilight and night markets in December: Martin Place in Sydney's CBD, Jolly's night markets, The Rocks under the Harbour Bridge, South Bank in Brisbane. The most European-style one is Hahndorf's Christkindlmarkt in the Adelaide Hills, in a village founded by German settlers. Many run only on weekends or a few nights, so check the dates.

What to eat, drink and buy

Street food from every cuisine, gelato, cold drinks and local wine and beer — and, at the German-style markets, bratwurst, pretzels and Glühwein. To take home: handmade gifts from local makers, Christmas decorations, jewellery and art.

Tips for a good visit

Go after sunset when it cools down and the lights come on; bring water, sunscreen and a hat for early sessions. Take the train, light rail or ferry where you can — CBD parking is expensive — and check whether a market is ticketed or free.
